Back to Childhood

Asian supermarket, Thanksgiving Day.

Package of cookies showed me a blue cartoon cat with no ears.

Are you kidding? Is that cat still around?

Maybe he's Taiwan's Mickey Mouse.

Checking out, I wished I'd learned some Chinese at my friend's house while reading that cat's comic books.

Just enough to tell the cashier, "Thank you."

G-Man,

Yeah, I just about tripped over my own feet when I saw that cartoon cat. I must not have even thought about him in 25 or 30 years.

You rock too!!!

Mona,

Being exposed to foreign-language comic books at a very young age probably helped make me into the huge fan of visual storytelling that I am today. I don't know how many books I "read" about that cat at my friend's house, despite not knowing a word of Chinese. They were great.

Strumpet,

Omigod, I just had an audio hallucination of Styx doing a cover of "Turning Japanese," complete with Denis DeYoung oversinging all the lyrics in his most dramatic tone while layering thick '70s synthesizer licks across all the instrumentation.

Don't get me wrong, I love Styx, but if they had covered "Turning Japanese," I do believe it would have been one of the most gut-burstingly hilarious mis-steps in rock-and-roll history.

Strumpet,

I'd tell you how I get it to do that trick ... but then I'd have to kill you.

Or maybe just tie you up and interrogate you, super-spy style.

; )

I would let you tie me up and interrogate me super-spy style without you even telling me your secrets.

We can just pretend that you did.

'voccense'
